Rest and Digest for Sleep

When we are in rhythm with our bodies we are able to rest and digest properly leaving us feeling energized to start the day. A huge component to modern living is caffeine. While most of us enjoy a healthy morning pick me up, too much caffeine overworks our body and taxes our adrenal glands, which secrete cortisol. Cortisol, aka the stress hormone, puts us in a reactionary state. While this is great for getting things done, it doesn’t necessarily aid us when it comes to rest and digestion. Excessive cortisol levels have been linked to extra belly fat, loss of bone density, and immune system damage. Melatonin, on the other hand, is a natural sleep hormone that changes levels throughout the day. In this meditation we want to trigger melatonin to kick in so we can prepare for proper rest and digestion. Darkness should naturally trigger this hormone so please practice this meditation in a completely dark room, at night, and avoid looking at your phone during this exercise and avoid TV and blue lighting after.
